How to teach a young adult with learning difficulties to use a communication book?
I am a speech therapy support worker and I am to teach a child without a book using voice communication. Can anyone tell me how to do it session by session or suggest a book on how. For example, one session. passing through the symbols in each section (food, transportation, etc) I am meeting with the therapist the next week to talk about it, but I wanted to be prepared!
Wow! How impressive! As mentioned in some of the other posts, I would like to see Change in Image Communication System (PECS). In summary, usually consists of laminated sheets in a book of Type 3 binder with photos of velcro that can be take in and out. The pages are generally organized by category, as you mentioned and may (should) be prepared according to the needs of each student. It is likely that begins with a page! I would definitely Start Small! What is the cognitive level of the child? Are you able to understand what they mean Photos? Can you read a word? Do you understand the cause and effect? What is their behavior like? For example, do you know that when someone yells come over or seem to be unaware of helping others with him? These almost all need to be in place for PECS to work. If he seems to understand that the image coincides with an object real life that's great! If he does not make the connection between image and object, you may have to start there. Matching objects and image (image of snacks and a Cheerio, picture of a toy and real favorite toy, etc.) You have a real cracker, cracker touching image given a choice of 2. The key is to start with motivator for the student objects as you are motivated to use the images and want to use. Even if it means getting 50 Cheerios in a row, as long as he is motivated to give the photos. If that does not seem to be working, you can try to "hand over hand" which may be familiar. You will need two adults. One gets the picture in his hand and moves his hand toward you so that the hand of the image. You take the picture and give the object. This may continue until the student gives the photos themselves. If it is able to perform these tasks independently, I would again start with a few objects or the mobilization only. A favorite small snack, sip a drink, play, book, massage, sensory object. What the student likes. It is helpful if the reward is small and fast so you can practice as many applications as possible. It is difficult ask five slices of pizza …. but easy to do …. 5 small cookies or whatever. Once he is able to request the specific objects can gradually increase the number of images from there …. again to continue with those that are most meaningful and motivate students. If you love books, books before teaching to apples. If you like a ride to take a break, teach to walk before teaching duties, etc. are not necessarily categories unless well underway and understand what those things mean. The key is that the pictures are meaningful and appropriate for him so he feels the need to use them. Once you see he gets what he wants from the pictures that are expected to use. In the long run, can not be desired physical objects, but their frustrations can be greatly reduced you need to communicate more effectively. Hope this helps and good luck! Your student is lucky to have someone who is so motivated to help you learn!
