I really want to learn to play the banjo …?

I have no idea where to start! I've never picked up a stringed instrument in my life. I know the first thing I have to do is get a banjo … any advice on brands or a chain of 4 vs. 5 string, so I read it seems I'm leaning more towards a string 5 so you can play bluegrass. Also, I'm not sure what the best way to learn is … would you recommend taking lessons, or is there any instructional DVD good for beginners who are not too hard to follow? Thanks in advance for all responses, also feel free to add your thoughts / tips / tips on playing the banjo.

Unless you live in a big city, it will be difficult to find a banjo teacher. Banjo players are becoming scarce (Unfortunately) do not play the banjo but it taught me guitar, and the highest quality you need to deal with a stringed instrument is the determination. Fingertips hurt like hell for a few months, and many have taken through the frustration. Keep trying, even when you mess up and do not think it impossible to choose banjo backup. I'd recommend a string of 5 purely because you can play more. Ukelele players have great difficulty playing some songs because they have only 4 strings.
